What is Family Based Treatment for Eating Disorders?

FBT is a research based treatment that has been proven to be the most effective method for treating eating disorders in teens.

In FBT, the therapist guides the parents in helping re-feed their child. Both the parents and child participate in weekly sessions.

In the sessions, the parents will gain tools on how to help their child, and the child will get the support that they need to heal.

FBT is effective for treating any eating issue on the eating spectrum, including dieting, disordered eating, or eating disorders.

How does it work?

1. Free 15 minute phone consultation with parents

Let’s chat.

Tell me about what’s been concerning you about your child.

At the end of the conversation, I will give you my professional opinion about how and where to start getting help.

I will direct you to additional professionals or treatment centers, to make sure that you are set up with the support that you need.

2. Initial nutritional assessment

Let’s meet.

Tell me the whole story. When it started, what happened, and what your child is struggling with now.

I will ask your child to share about their eating habits, their body image concerns, and about their physical and emotional health.

At the end of the session, I will make an assessment of your child's nutritional status, and propose a treatment plan based on your child’s needs.

3. Session with parents

Let’s learn.

In this session, I’m going to teach you everything that you need to know about what your child is experiencing and how you can help.

I will make sure that you are set up with all of the multidisciplinary support that you need by directing you to additional professionals and treatment centers that specialize in the field for example- pediatricians, therapists, psychiatrists ect.

You will get a detailed list of medical tests that should be done to monitor your child's medical status.

You’ll leave this session with a step by step nutritional treatment plan, ready to put into action.

4. First family session

Let’s start.

Both the child and parents will attend this meeting to discuss the treatment plan, and how to start.

In this session, we will define the role of the child and the parents during meal time.

You and your child will leave this session fully equipped to start.

5. Follow up sessions

Let’s continue.

In most cases, the child and a parent will attend weekly sessions, however, this varies with each case.

In these sessions, we will review the treatment plan, and discuss conflicts that may come up around meal time.

Our sessions will focus on helping your child regulate their eating, restore physical health, and feel confident in their body.

6. Reaching your goals

Let’s summarize.

Treatment comes to a closing when your child has returned to optimum physical and emotional health, and feels confident around food.

The end of treatment will look different for each child. Some patients stay in treatment for months, and others prefer ongoing support for an extended amount of time.

At this point in treatment, we will summarize the treatment journey, and prepare your child for independence.

7. I’m here for you

Let’s keep in touch

When treatment comes to a close, it’s important to keep in touch. I suggest that you and your child come in for a check up every few months to make sure that your child stays on track.

Life has it’s ups and downs, and so does our eating. If you notice that your child is showing signs of struggle, don’t hesitate to reach out.
